Just a short drive from Philadelphia or Washington, DC, Reading and Berks County, Pennsylvania, offers the perfect mix of adventure, food, and seasonal charm for families looking to make memories.

We packed our weekend with fun, laughter, and a little bit of everything—interactive museums, scenic trails, playful eats, and sweet treats that had everyone grinning from ear to ear.

Morning at the Reading Public Museum

Our adventure began at the Reading Public Museum, a place that feels magical no matter your age. The kids couldn’t get enough of the Mo Willems exhibits—searching for Elephant & Piggie and chasing after the mischievous Pigeon. But the real highlight? Seeing all the animal exhibits - from majestic lions to sleek leopards. There’s something about seeing those creatures up close that brings out excitement in every kid (and adult!) and sets the tone for a weekend full of wonder.

Lunchtime Relaxation at Coastal Grille

After a morning of exploration, it was time to refuel. Coastal Grille offered the perfect break—fresh seafood, classic family favorites, and a laid-back atmosphere that made everyone feel at home. Even the pickiest eaters found something they loved, and the whole table left smiling and satisfied, ready for the next adventure.

Afternoon Adventure at Mast Farms

Next, we headed to Mast Farms, where adventure awaited around every corner. The kids raced on pedal carts, climbed hay towers, and even tried the zip lines. Meanwhile, we all indulged in fall favorites like cider donuts and chocolatey treats, savoring the sweet flavors that only autumn can bring. It was equal parts action and indulgence—a perfect combination for

families looking for a little thrill and a lot of fun.

Sweet Treats at Pop’s Malt Shoppe

No fall getaway is complete without dessert, and Pop’s Malt Shoppe didn’t disappoint. The retro diner vibe immediately transported us back in time, and the shakes, loaded fries, and sundaes were absolute showstoppers. We took a moment to slow down, savor every bite, and laugh at our sugar-fueled antics before heading out to enjoy the rest of the day.

Golden Hour at Blue Marsh Lake

With full bellies and happy hearts, we drove to Blue Marsh Lake to soak in the crisp fall air. The trails were lined with golden leaves, and the kids ran freely, collecting treasures along the way. There’s something so simple—and yet so magical—about watching your family enjoy nature together. It’s one of those moments you know you’ll remember forever.

Cozy Dinner at Blue Marsh Italian Restaurant

We wrapped up our weekend at Blue Marsh Italian Restaurant, a cozy spot where pizza, pasta, and warm ambiance brought the perfect close to our adventure. As the sun set, we reminisced about the day’s highlights, feeling grateful for a weekend that was equal parts active, tasty, and heartwarming.

Why This Getaway Works

This trip proves that a memorable fall getaway doesn’t have to break the bank. Most activities cost under $20 per person, it’s stroller-friendly with plenty of space to roam, and it’s just a short drive from Philly or DC.
